 About the Role

Laytons is seeking an Associate (Solicitor) to join its busy Employment team, with further growth anticipated over the coming year. The Employment team handle a wide range of contentious and non-contentious matters with a balance of claimant and respondent work, advising international clients, high net worth individuals, and corporate and commercial entities. The Associate will ideally be around 5-8 PQE, and will provide key support to the Partners and manage a varied caseload.


Key Responsibilities

  1. Handle a broad range of contentious and non-contentious Employment matters, providing legal expertise, advice and guidance to clients.
  2. Manage Employment Tribunal claims and act as the primary representative for individual members in Employment Tribunals and civil courts.
  3. Delivering high-quality oral and written advocacy for preliminary and merits hearings.
  4. Draft and negotiate settlement and severance agreements.
  5. Draft various employment documentation including defences, witness statements, policies, employment contracts and create bundles.
  6. Provide day-to-day employment law advice on TUPE, disciplinaries, grievances, redundancy, discrimination, ill-health/sickness matters and performance management.
  7. Delivering high quality client presentations and training, both in person and online.
  8. Assist the department as a whole in meeting its fee earning targets. 
  9. Stay up-to-date with relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards related to Employment matters in England and Wales and other relevant jurisdictions.
  10. Ensure that all matters adhere to legal and regulatory requirements, including anti-money laundering (AML) and compliance procedures.
  11. Mentor and develop junior team members, supervise staff members and other supervisory duties.
  12. Develop and maintain strong client relationships, demonstrating a proven track record of business development and identify opportunities to refer work to other departments.
  13. Demonstrate consistent willingness to become involved in activities of the firm, including marketing, outside of normal working hours.
  14. Promote good file management.
  15. Understand the importance of time recording and financial control with particular regard to cash-flow control through collection of monies on account and billing procedures.
  16. You may also be required to undertake other or additional duties as the firm may reasonably require from time to time.


 Skills and Experience Requirements

- Qualified Solicitor (England & Wales) with strong Employment law experience (contentious & non-contentious). Preferably around 5-8 PQE level as a guideline.

- Strong technical ability and drafting skills.

- Strong advocacy skills.

- Experience of supervising and developing junior team members.

- Experience of delivering client presentations and training, both in person and online.

- Able to build and manage client portfolios, with potential to generate ongoing or repeat work. 

- Good team player with a collegiate and collaborative approach.

- Able to plan workloads and resources effectively, work to deadlines and prioritise tasks.

- Excellent client care and client support skills

- Excellent interpersonal skills

- Good IT skills with ability to use case management systems.
